Embedded Analytics & BI Checklist

If you are in the process of building out your embedded analytics & business intelligence strategy then this checklist is aimed at helping with your discovery stage. What vendors you should have on your shortlist, what questions to ask and key capabilities you will need in your SaaS platform.

Do I buy or build?

This question always comes up at the start of the discovery process. Great development teams may want to build out your own analytics capabilities, whilst this may make sense initially it will soon prove expensive and onerous.

Partnering with an embedded analytics & business intelligence vendor from the beginning will avoid false starts and deliver value to you and your customers sooner.

What vendors should I shortlist?

A common mistake when looking at embedded analytics & business intelligence vendors is to look at the general BI marketplace or check out who is on the Gartner BI Magic Quadrant.  General BI Vendors do have some capability to offer embedded analytics, however, these are limited and not their core offering.

There are a growing number of vendors who specialize in delivering platforms at purely at embedding analytics and business intelligence into your application stack. These include Qrvey, Cuml.io, Panintelligence and Metabase.

These vendors would be the best place to start when looking at creating your vendor shortlist.

Does the solution fit my stack?

Is the solution a good fit for your application stack? Does the vendor offer easily deployable solutions within your cloud? Can the vendor offer their cloud as an option to get started on?

Can it be white labelled easily?

Ensuring that your chosen solution can be easily customized to match your brand and application look and feel is an important consideration. Make sure your shortlisted vendors have the capability to support customisable CSS and change icons, backgrounds, colours, and images. 

Is my data secure?

In order to deliver their solution some vendors need to move your data, this can cause security issues and raise concerns internally, especially with your data and legal teams. Look to shortlist a vendor who can access your data where it resides and does not need to move or duplicate it.

Can I use my own authentication model?

Not having to replicate all your application users is important as well as not having multiple passwords. Hooking into your authentication system is key, as is delivering your analytics & insights via a single integrated sign on.

Is it easy for my developers to embed?

Embeddability is clearly key, it must be quick and easy for your developers to embed the vendors solution. Make sure the solution requires minimal coding for your developers and no-coding for your product owners and customers.

How does the vendor charge for their solution?

You need to ensure that your chosen solution is aligned with your growth stages. Make sure you vendor has a modularized approach, so that you only deploy what you and your customers need. The vendor’s pricing model should also be flexible to mimic how you price your SaaS application.
